· Why do we assess reading?
Assessing reading provides teachers with the appropriate
background on student’s progress. In addition, it is important to assess
reading to see student’s problematic areas so you may tailor lesson plans based
on areas student struggle the most.
· What do we assess when we assess reading?
When assessing student’s reading levels, we focus on how they
are able to identify the appropriate sounds and their ease of reading.
Depending on student’s education level, it is imperative, that students are
able to identify key terms and they are able to summarize and provide context
to the passage.
· How (and where and when) do we assess reading?
Reading assessments can be completed within the classroom,
resource class (with a specialist). Typically, assessments are completed in the
beginning of the school year, midway and at the end of a unit.
· What reading assessments do you know of?
Assessing reading can be completed through group read aloud, discussions
and one-one reading. By separating groups through reading levels, teachers can
devote time to each group level to identify reading problems.
· Did you observe any reading assessments in the
classroom? Explain type of the assessment and the procedures.
In the past, I’ve
witnessed a teacher conduct a reading assessment by splitting up students to
small groups and conducting a read along. Students follow along as their fellow
classmates complete a reading. The teacher follows along and make notes of each
students performance to tailor a lesson plan to the various struggles within
the group.
