Week 3: Assignment 1

When identifying student with learning disabilities, there are several areas in which you will have to observe and focus on to diagnose their level of comprehensions. Though this is listed as one of the areas of importance, I didn't consider cultural factors of one major factors! Prior to reading on various  learning disabilities, I did take into consideration secondary languages but the article on "Response to Intervention (RTI): What Teachers of Reading Need to Know", gave a different perspective of some of the challenges students may have.  In addition, the RTI focuses on five Intervention steps that eval-uates students intervention services, in comparison to the article "The Assessment of Thoughtful Literacy in NAEP: Why the States Aren’t Measuring Up", many states have lowered the bar of achievement based on data stemming from the No Child Left Behind Act. Instead of tackling the issues head on, teachers are simply lowering the bar which in turn effects students critical thinking and comprehension skills which follows them through college to adulthood. Some of the tactics referred to in the text, highlights the comprehension of text by highlighting words and asking students to identify the context based on the sentence/paragraph. By providing students the location of the word in the text, students are able to sharpen their critical thinking skills and provide teachers with a comprehension assessment. The Assessment of Thoughtful
