What is DIBELS? DIBELS is the evaluation of the students early literary skills during the grades K-6 th grade. When administering DIBELS teachers utilize a benchmark to ensure students are testing at level or close to grade level. Based on a student’s scoring, teachers are able to assign additional instruction and resources for students early in their academic career to make adjustments. During assessments, teachers obtain a Progress Monitoring Report, which highlights student’s achievement through assessments that highlights performance within phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. · Why do we assess reading? Assessing reading provides teachers with the appropriate background on student’s progress. In addition, it is important to assess reading to see student’s problematic areas so you may tailor lesson plans based on areas student struggle the most. · What do we assess when we assess reading? When assessing student’s reading levels, we focus on how they are able to identify the appropriate sounds and their ease of reading. Depending on student’s education level, it is imperative, that students are able to identify key terms and they are able to summarize and provide context to the passage. · How (and where and when) do we assess reading?
