What is DIBELS?
DIBELS is the evaluation of the students early literary skills
during the grades K-6th grade. When administering DIBELS teachers
utilize a benchmark to ensure students are testing at level or close to grade
level. Based on a student’s scoring, teachers are able to assign additional
instruction and resources for students early in their academic career to make
adjustments. During assessments, teachers obtain a Progress Monitoring Report,
which highlights student’s achievement through assessments that highlights performance
within phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary.
ISF
Initial Sound Fluency is defined as the administered measure of
a student’s ability to recognize the initial sound in an orally present word.
For example, present students with a set of word and asking them to identify which
word would have a particular sound (which word begins with c (dog, boy, car)?
This assessment typically takes place during kindergarten and the facilitator factors
time and score to assessment level.
Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate a
sound. When learning how to blend words, teachers typically use continuous sounds
to increase student’s knowledge of sound awareness. Phonemic awareness is
assessed during Kindergarten and 1st grade. Typically assessed three
times a year and if student is struggling, they are monitored at least 1 to 2
times a month.
Alphabetic Principal
Alphabetic Principal is broken into two categories, alphabetic
understanding and phonological reading. Alphabetic understanding is concept of
words are composed of letters that represent sounds. Phonological reading is
the relationship amongst letters and sounds (regular reading, irregular reading
and advance learning analysis).
Zulayka,
ReplyDeleteI like your comparison of the two assessments. I also think your explanation of what DIBELS is was also very good
